Albrecht Classen, wrote in his book The Medieval Chastity Belt: A Myth-making Process, that it is highly unlikely that women’s chastity was preserved in this way. The reason we think they existed is because they were depicted in books from around 1400. However, it is likely that it was a satirical joke.

It is much more likely that historians did not begin to accept the rumors of this chastity belt until the 18th and 19th centuries, as it showed that civilization was a lot better than “in the Middle Ages.” During the Renaissance, people were only too happy to believe that. The British Museum removed another chastity belt in 1996, because it turned out that it actually came from the 18th century.

Yet more symbolic chastity belts already existed in ancient Rome. The bride was put on a tunic with a rope to symbolically represent her chastity. The groom was then allowed to untie the knot on the wedding night to consume the wedding.

The chastity belts and cages you can buy nowadays focus on the excruciating erotic anticipation of putting yourself (or rather, your orgasm) in the hands of another. 1. A cage or chastity belt

2. How long should it be worn?
