The thing with bondage is, that the person who gets tied up could be in a fixed position and can’t move. That may seem like the general idea of bondage, but it doesn’t allow the partner to have access to some of the more interesting intimate parts. When you would like to combine bondage and sex in many different positions, there is a great device: the spreader bar.
What is a spreader bar?
A spreader bar is nothing more (and nothing less) than a rod that is connected to a couple of cuffs. It is meant to tie the wrists and or the ankles, so the person who is toed up is forced to keep legs or arms apart. Some spreader bars have extra rings or hooks, so they can be connected to other bondage gear, such as a chain.
Once tied to the spreader bar, there is lots you can do to the person, like spanking, using a flogger or a paddle, or whip, forced orgasm … well, you know, use your imagination.
Spreader bars differ in length, matrial, number of cuffs or connection points. The price may vary from €25 up to a couple of hundred euros. There is one for every budget. There are people who make their own spreader bars out of thick bondage rope, or a broomstick and some Duct tape.
Like with all forms of bondage, it is important to keep safety of the tied up person in mind. Make sure that person is not tied up to tight, because it might damage nerves, tendons or blood vessels. Not only would that be very painful, you also risk serious permanent damage. Make sure you can untie someone quickly, for instance when he or she is having a panic attack. That’s why we love Velcro so much. Also, please bare in mind that a person who is in spreader bars standing up, might trip and fall.
Spreader bar enabled positions

The most basic way to use the spreader bar is called the ‘Basic Y’. Just connect the ankles to the cuffs, forcing the person to spread the legs far apart. You can have that person standing up, siting down, or lying on the back or front. Extremely easy and hours of fun guaranteed.
When you add a second spreader bar into the equation for the wrists, you turn the ‘Basic Y’ into the ‘Basic X’. For the ‘Basic X’ you use the second spreader bar for the wrists. Tie these in front of the chest of your partner or above the head of that person. Spreader bars for arms and wrists are usually a lot shorter.

Other spreader bars have the functionality to connect both the ankles and wrists at the same time to one bar. This enables you to completely immobilize your ‘victim’
This type of spreader bars can be used in many different ways. If you are and advanced bondage expert, you can even consider using this type of spreader bars for hogties.

Spreader bars that have cuffs for both ankles and wrists are also perfect for position ‘doggy style‘. First tie the ankles to the spreader bar. Then let your partner kneel on the floor. Then let your partner bend over so you can tie the wrists to the bar. This should give you great access for vaginal or anal sex.
A spreader bar enables you to restrain someone in all kinds of positions, both standing up and laying down. The bar for the wrists can also be placed behind the back or in the neck. When the bar has extra connection points, you can hook it up to a chain or a hook in the ceiling. Be careful when you plan on putting a lot of weight to it. If you want to use the spreader bar for suspension, all materials you use (including that hook in the ceiling) must be able to carry at least twice the weight of your partner.
I think it is fair to say that the spreader bar is a very versatile device with more perspectives for use than you might expect on first glance.
Spreader bars make bondage even more exciting
Bondage is very exciting in itself, but if you can restrain someone and have sex at the same time, it gets even hotter. The spreader bar enables you to tie someone up and immobilize that person completely, while you still have access to the most intimate places.

A simple but effective spreader bar for beginners, is this one from Sinner Gear. The spreader bar is made of aluminum which makes it very light weighted, but also solid at the same time.
The bar contains 4 rings for connecting cuffs, ropes, chains or other bondage gear.
This spreader bar from Sinner Gear is 60cm long and costs €24,95.

Another affordable spreader bar is this one. It only costs €42,95 and can be used for standing positions or doggy style.
The extra strong nylon that is used, ensures your partner has no where to go and because the middle part is enhanced with a metal bar, he or she will be unable to switch positions.
