On Netflix, you can now watch the Swedish film “Året jag slutade prestera och började onanera” (The Year I Started Masturbating). In the film, Katia Winter (from Dexter and Sleepy Hollow) plays the successful Hanna with a busy job. Her relationship is strained and in order to give more time to her boyfriend and child, she quits her job (under pressure from her boyfriend). But the boyfriend breaks up with her and puts her out on the street. With no job and no home, she meets young Liv (played by singer Vera Carlbom), who advises her to listen to her vagina more.
Don’t expect steamy sex from this film. Rather, it’s a shamelessly lighthearted romcom. The moral of the story is thin, but certainly not untrue: masturbating makes you produce all kinds of happy hormones and you relax. As a result, you become happier. And that is exactly what happens to the main character.
