In our email there was a question from one of our readers: “I am going on a date with a man who has a circumcised penis soon. Is it very different to have sex with a circumcised penis? Do I have to take anything into account when jerking off or giving a blowjob? I would like to be prepared for this date. Do you have tips?”
Circumcision in men
Many men worldwide have been circumcised. This mainly happens for religious reasons. Jewish and Muslim men in particular have been circumcised for that reason. Occasionally circumcision is performed for medical reasons. Men with a narrowed foreskin will be circumcised if the foreskin cannot be pulled back over the glans. This can be painful with an erection. This procedure can also offer a solution for an inflamed foreskin (Balanitis). The procedure is also used in men who suffer from premature ejaculation, because the removal of the foreskin would make the glans less sensitive. However, the effect of this has been contradicted by several scientists. The British Royal Family also had all men circumcised because it was a tradition, until Princess Di refused to have it done to her sons.
Men used to be circumcised for hygienic or preventive reasons. In the United States, this still happens to 40% of boys. According to a 2010 research by the Royal Dutch Society for the Promotion of Medicine (KNMG) , there is no professional medical organization in the Netherlands that still encourages circumcision. The KNMG sees non-therapeutic circumcision in minors (male circumcision) as a violation of the integrity of the body. This constitutionally established right protects people against unintentional interventions in or on the body. According to the KNMG, minors may only be exposed to medical procedures if there are illnesses or abnormalities, or if it can be conclusively demonstrated that the procedure is in the best interest of the child. Boys are born with a prepuce and that is therefore the biological default.
Even so, adult men sometimes decide to have the foreskin removed for cosmetic reasons, or because it is thought that the sex for the receiving party will be more enjoyable.
Most men in the Netherlands are not circumcised. In Canada, Australia and Europe about 10% of men have been circumcised. In America 40% of the births are circumcised. The WHO estimates that 35% of men worldwide are circumcised, mainly in North Africa and the Middle East.
Some facts
- In a circumcision, the foreskin of the penis is surgically removed.
- An uncircumcised penis is no dirtier than a circumcised penis. Whether a penis is hygienic mainly depends on the habits of the owner of the penis. If he washes himself regularly, there is nothing to worry about.
- Contrary to popular belief, you do not have a higher risk of venereal disease or infection if you have sex with an uncircumcised penis. Yes, for the person with the penis, the risk of infection with HPV and HIV would be lower during PiV (Penis in Vagina) sex, but that risk would not be any less with anal sex or oral sex. It is not clear what the effect is for partners with a vagina. Scientists often contradict each other on this point as well.
- It is also unclear whether a circumcised penis is less sensitive than an uncircumcised penis. One theory is that the skin on the glans of a circumcised penis thickens because it is not always protected. That thicker skin would make the glans less sensitive. However, there is no conclusive scientific evidence. In 2016, 38 different scientific studies were compared and no clear conclusion was drawn from this. ¯\(ツ)/¯
On a date with a man with a circumcised penis
A circumcised penis is not much of a mystery. The way the penis works – and the way you satisfy the person attached to it – is pretty much the same. There is also no difference for the partner with a vagina. At least, based on science. But there are a few differences.
First of all, the skin of the uncircumcised penis acts as a kind of handy tube that protects the (sensitive) glans, such as the cap of the clitoris. If you grasp the erect penis under the glans and move your hand up, the foreskin will slide between your hand and the rim of the glans, as it were. When jerking off, you pull the foreskin over the glans and back. There is no protective skin in a circumcised penis, however. That is why many circumcised men prefer to use a lubricant when jerking off. Oil or spit also works, but because you may also be having PiV (Penis in Vagina) sex after jerking off, spit could get into the vagina (with a risk of infection). Oil could damage a condom. If you wank a circumcised man with lube, you can do it in the same way that you are used to doing an uncircumcised man.
Also with oral sex it can be important to protect the glans, for example by placing your tongue over your lower front teeth. Then push this ‘dam’ against the sensitive triangle of the glans (frenulum – this technique also works for men who are uncircumcised). Sometimes, however, the frenulum is also damaged during the circumcision. In that case, the penis will be much less sensitive. In general circumcised men enjoy oral sex, precisely because it is wetter than jerking off (without lubricant).
When putting on a condom, uncircumcised men often need to pull down the foreskin before unrolling the condom. This is of course not necessary for uncircumcised men.
Every man is different, so circumcised men cannot be shaved. Communication therefore remains important.
