Sex toys for men
Women have a head-start when it comes to sex toys. Several studies have shown that women are much more likely than men to use sex toys while masturbating. It is also much more accepted to use sex toys – which are intended for women – when having sex between two heterosexual people. It is time to eradicate that difference.
How many men use sex toys?
In an online survey of 1,723 heterosexual adults in Germany, 45% of the total sample said they had used a sex toy during masturbation. But if you break that number down by gender, it turns out that it’s 53% of women compared to just 37% of men.
Consider that Germany is a country with a fairly sexually liberal and sexually positive culture. In countries with a somewhat more sexually conservative culture, such as the United States for example, it has been found that 46% of women and only 17% of men say they have used a sex toy during masturbation at some point in their lives.
So it is fair to conclude that there is a gender gap when it comes to sex toys. Most men don’t use toys while masturbating. Dutch men do use toys together with their partner. About 56% of the Dutch men use a vibrator, dildo, cock ring, or vibrating eggs during sex with their partner. This is shown by research by FHM. It is striking that the toys mentioned are mainly intended for sexual pleasure of the (female) partner.
Taboo on sex toys for men
However you look at it, most men don’t use sex toys during masturbation. And maybe those men are missing out on something. For example, when men – in the German study – are asked about the effects of using sex toys on their sex life, men report overwhelmingly positive effects. So there is definitely something to be gained in terms of fun and satisfaction.
This is partly because sex toys are a form of sexual novelty. They allow us to experience something new. The most commonly used sex toys in men are so-called masturbators. A masturbator is usually a kind of sleeve that goes around the penis to stimulate it.
A better sex life through sex toys
There is some research showing that using a masturbator may help men overcome certain sexual problems. For example, masturbation sleeves have been used as a successful treatment for both premature ejaculation and delayed orgasm. That’s because they can help men develop better ejaculation control through exercise. And that explains why men who use sex toys generally report better sexual functioning.
What types of sex toys for men are there and what should you pay attention to?
If you are considering using a masturbator for the first time, what should you keep in mind? There are endless options, which can make you quite daunting by choice stress during the search. No worries. We’ll help you.
First of all, I advise you to carefully read reviews. There are not many male sex toy testers, but reviews of the most popular models can be found online – also here on NBRplaza. Also read the tips from our editorial member Jennifer about using masturbators with your partner.
The most accessible sex toys for men are the so-called ‘sleeves’. These are tubes made of very soft and flexible material (usually TPE; a kind of soft and stretchy rubber that feels like skin). They have an entrance that can look like a pussy, an ass, a mouth, or just any hole. But these ‘sleeves’ are actually all about the inside; it often has a texture that provides extra sensation while moving the sleeve up and down over the penis. In fact, you are jerking yourself (or your partner) off by wrapping the sleeve over the penis.
Some of these sleeves have a hard shell. That makes it easier to handle the sleeve. Perhaps the best known are the Fleshlights.
These sleeves differ enormously in price, size and quality. Some are intended for single use – such as the Tenga Egg – and others can be cleaned and reused a number of times. Others – such as the Tenga Air Cups – make clever use of a vacuum, so that you feel as if you are being sucked off.
Always use a water based lube when you are using one of these masturbators.
Mechanical blowjob machines
There seems to be some sort of quest for the ultimate blowjob machine. Manufacturers roll over each other claiming that they can emulate the best blowjob.
These types of devices also consist of a ‘sleeve’, but there is a mechanically moving part around the sleeve that ‘milks’ the penis, in a sense.
I have tested some of these blowjob machines and I have to say that they feel quite nice on the penis, but they also make quite a bit of mechanical noise in general. Furthermore, the motor that is needed often makes the device quite heavy, so that ‘hand-free’ masturbation (which is often promised) is not really an option.
Vibrators for the penis
In fact, you could hold any vibrator against the penis. Any bullet vibrator or wand vibrator would do. There are also attachments for wand vibrators that are intended for the penis. You then, as it were, attach a masturbation sleeve to the head of the wand vibrator and thus make it a (quite effective) sex toy for the penis.
Other vibrating toys for the penis have less obvious shapes, such as the Fun Factory Manta (also read my review). This is a powerful vibrator that you can use solo to massage the penis (especially the glans and frenulum), but is also great to use with your partner.
Other manufacturers also make such toys. The Satisfyer Multifun 3 (also read my review), for example, is somewhat comparable. This one focuses more on couples and less on solo sex for men with a penis.
Not for the penis, but for the man, are so-called prostate massagers. The prostate is to men what the G-spot is to women. Read more about prostate massage.
Many men shy away from a prostate massage because there is only one way to do it and that is … through the anus. Still, a prostate vibrator can greatly enhance orgasm.
A prostate massager like the We Vibe Vector (also read the review) is excellent for beginners. It can be operated remotely via the remote control supplied, or via an app. Furthermore, the Vector is bendable and not only massages the prostate, but also the perineum!
