When it is your job to test drive cars for an auto magazine, it is much more fun of course to test a Mercedes than a Kia. It’s not much different for a sex toy tester. So when EasyToys asked me if I wanted to test the LELO Smart Wand Large, I didn’t mind at all!

LELO is a Swedish company, that is well known for their luxurious sex toys that are innovative and of a high quality standard. With their Smart Wand Large they reinvented the legendary wand vibrator, if you ask me.

Spoiler alert: This wand vibrator may be somewhat more expensive than others, but it wins in every aspect of its competitors!

What is a LELO Smart Wand Large?

In 1968 Hitachi launched their legendary Magic Wand. It was meant as a massage device, but during the sexual revolution, it was soon discovered that this thing was up to much more. Wand vibrators have become a category of its own ever since and they are renowned for their deepest vibrations.

LELO did not try to copy the Hitachi. No, they rather reinvented it. The design is – as may be expected from LELO – very chique and could fit in any boudoir. LELO’s Smart Wand is made of the finest silicone. The motor is extremely powerful despite – and here comes the beauty of it all – it is rechargeable and is therefor not stuck to a wire. This means you can use the LELO Smart Wand anywhere. In fact, it is also 100% waterproof so you can even take it to the shower or bath!

LELO doesn’t call this wand ‘Smart’ for nothing, because it comes with so called ‘SenseTouch’ technology. This means it will adapt its speed when it comes into contact with your body.

There is also a Smart Wand Medium available. That one is smaller, lighter and less powerful than this big boy.

Specs & functions

So, the LEO Smart Wand Large is a big (30,5 centimeter long) and heavy (395 gram) vibrator with very powerful vibration. The entire device is covered with soft high quality silicone that has a matte finish. On the shaft is a little piece of ABS plastic that kinda looks like metal. The head of this wand is 6 centimeter in girth and is flexible (the ‘neck’ can bend).

The batteries are charged in about 2 hours. After that, you can play with it for about 2 hours. Once charged, the LELO Smart Wand can be in stand by for 90 days before having to recharge it.

The LELO distinguishes itself from other wands because it is extremely silent. That is a big surprise because the motor is so powerful.

It contains three buttons. The middle one is used to toggle between the vibration patterns and with the + and – buttons you can change the intensity of each pattern. I find that briljant! There are 8 different patterns, of which the first one is a constant vibration. What is a shame however, is that the middle button only let’s you go through the patterns in one direction. So if you want to go back to the previous pattern, you will have to go through all of the other ones first.

The middle button also let’s you activate the SenseTouch technology. When you hold it for three seconds, the wand will vibrate in the softest intensity of the pattern it is in. When you hold the head against a place of your body, the wand will start to vibrate at higher speed. When you switch it off while in SenseTouch mode, it will start up in SenseTouche mode the next time you switch it on.

Further more the LELO’s Smart Wand is completely waterproof.

Unboxing

Unpacking a LELO is always a party. The box of the LELO Smart Wand was literally wrapped in some kind of cotton paper. Therefor the box was completely undamaged. By the weight of the box, you could already feel that this is some serious device.

Funny enough the box is white and contains pictures that rather reminds me of a massage in a luxurious spa. In fact, on the back of the box are photos of a woman who gives herself a back massage with this device. LELO tries to position this as a versatile device that can also be used for massages.

When you take of the packaging layer, a beautiful white box appears. The LELO Smart Wand Large lies down in a comfortable bed. A compartment contains the charger, a storage bag, a sample of lube, a manual in six languages and a registration code for 1 year full guarantee and 10 years of quality guarantee.

The ‘test drive’

I’ll be very clear about it: this is the top of the line when it comes to wand vibrators. The vibrations are deep and yet surprisingly silent. Where other powerful wands often have a cord, this one is rechargeable, without losing power. Furthermore it has a beautiful design and it is easy to use.

The good thing of this giant wand, is that you hardly feel the vibrations in the handle. You are not going to get numb hands. Also it allows you to place the head virtually anywhere at your body. Even against the middle of your own back, if that is what you would want. And according to the pictures on the box, you might.

LELO SenseTouch Technology

What makes the LELO Smart Wand truly unique is its SenseTouch technologie. When you activate it the wand will start to vibrate on the lowest intensity. As soon as the head comes into contact with your skin, it will start to vibrate fast. You can now adjust the intensity with the + and – buttons and you can change the pattern. As soon as the head looses contact with the skin, it will go into the lowest intensity position again.

The opinions about this technology are very divided. And I think that has to do with the expectations. Some may expect this technology to be more than it actually is. You see, SenseTouch will NOT vibrate harder when you press it harder against your body. And it might happen that it will continue to vibrate a couple of seconds even if it is no longer in contact with the body.

We – I tested this toy together with my partner – think there is one major advantage about SenseTouch. When you put aside the wand during play, it will go into some kind of ‘stealth mode’ and when you pick it up again to continue with whatever it was you where doing, it will start to vibrate fast again. That makes this LELO Smart Wand very discrete.

You have to get used to it. Once you’ve figured out how it behaves – let’s be honest, it does require some experimenting – then you will agree this is a very nice feature.

LELO Smart Wand Large for sex or massages?

t should be clear that we use the LELO Smart Wand Large mainly for sex. The deep low vibrations makes it great for all kinds of play. The battery life is good. You don’t have to recharge it after each session. If you like deep powerful vibrations, then orgasms are inevitable with the LELO Smart Wand Large.

Yet, LELO seems to position this device rather as a wellness product. The pictures on the white box suggest that, anyway. Especially the SenseTouch mode is ‘rather nice’ for a back massage. But not really impressive, to my opinion. Perhaps, I didn’t really feel the need to get myself a massage…Mêh.

Cleaning

In the early days, LELO used to supply some antibacterial cleaning spray with their devices, but they stopped doing so. Why would they? The wand is very easy to clean. Just hold it under running water and rinse. You may want to use some soft soap.

The Smart Wand Large does not have any strange edges or ridges where dirt can pile up. Cleaning is a breeze.

Lube

The sample of lube that LELO supplied is of the best quality. It is waterbased lube that is free of perfumes, glycerine and parabenes. Unfortunately, the sample is only sufficient for one time use.

To be sure your LELO stays in optimale shape, it is recommended to use water based lube at all times.

Conclusion

When you are looking for a powerful wand vibrator with deep intense vibrations, the LELO Smart Wand Large is the best of what’s out there. Some might swear on the Hitachi Magic Wand (over here available as the Europe Magic Wand), but I think that is just because of sentimental reasons.

The LELO Smart Wand Large is both the Beauty and the Beast: don’t let the design or the silent motor fool you, because it is one of – if not the – most powerful wand vibrators that is on the market.

The cons:

• SenseTouch technology is not perfect
• Too bad you can only go one way through the patterns (only up, not down)
• Yeah, it is a bit expensive (but so worth it)
• The charging cable of this Smart Wand looks the same as those of other LELO devices. But they are absolutely not compatible!
• The manual is in very small font (I had to say something)
