Consumer electronics develop rapidly and as often with emerging technologies, the adult entertainment industry leads the way. When Easytoys asked me to review the Kiiroo Couples set, I was super enthusiastic. I am following the developments in teledildonics closely and I have been damned intrigued with the products of the Amsterdam based company Kiiroo since they’ve started.
There might be better sex toys around, but not with these interactieve capabilities.
The capabilities of the Kiiroo set seem endless. That’s why this has become a rather long review and even now I won’t be able to tell you all there is to say. So lean back and read on.
What is teledildonics and what is the idea behind the Kiiroo Couples set?
The whole idea behind the products of Kiiroo is based on Teledildonics. This is a technology with which you are able to have interactive and physical virtual sex, or touch on a distance.
You can connect the Kiiroo devices by means of an app to other devices (of different brands) or online services. This enables you to:
- Watch a (Virtual Reality) porn video and actually feel what happens in the video
- Connect with a webcam performer and feel what he or she does
- Feel like you are actually have physical sex with someone on the other side of the world
- Mutually masturbate, while you feel what the other person does
If you, for instance, move the Pearl2 in and out of a women, the man can feel it in the Onyx2
The Kiiroo Couples set that I tested together with my partner, exists of the Pearl2 vibrator and the Onyx2 masturbator. Both devices can be used solo, can be connected (through an app over the internet) with a pron website and webcam performers, to each other, or to other teledildonics devices. They both have sensors that enable you to pass the movements you make on one device to another device. So, if you, for instance, move the Pearl2 in and out of a women, the man can feel it in the Onyx2.
Unboxing the set
As mentioned, the Kiiroo Couples set consists of the Pearl2 vibrator and the Onyx2 masturbator. When you open the box, you will find both devices packaged separately. Further more, there is a small empty box, probably to fill the empty space. Not exactly environmentally friendly…
At first Unboxing the Pearl2
The Pearl2 vibrator is shipped with a USB charging cable of about 1 meter. Further more, it comes with is a ‘quick set up’ guide, a card with reference to an online manual on Kiiroo’s website, and an instruction to register the product for 1 year guarantee.
The Pearl2 is a luxurious vibrator made of soft silicone. The box has a recess in foam that can be used to store the Pearl2.
The charging cable goes into the bottom of the Pearl2. Yet, the Pearl2 is completely waterproof, so it is safe to take it with you under the shower or in the bathtub.
At first I was disappointed that there was no complete manual included, but meanwhile I understand why. This product is still under development and there are regular updates on the firmware, the apps and the websites that support the Kiiroo products. A manual would be outdated too fast. In fact, even the online manual was already aged; It still contained a link to a website, that no longer exists. Kind of sloppy.
Unboxing the Onyx2
The Onyx2 is shipped in a box together with a USB charging cable, a quick setup guide, charging instructions, a card referring to the online manual and instructions to register the device. Further more it contains a bag that contains a ‘Fleshlight’ sleeve that must be inserted into the Onyx2 and two vouchers for discount at porn sites with interactive content.
The Onyx2 needs charging for 4 to 5 hours (!) before first use. All this time you will not be able to use it. The USB charging cable is from a different type then the one for the Pearl2. As a consumer I have to deal with all of these different chargers and I would welcome a little standardization! You would expect that a high-tech company like Kiiroo would have thought about that. Minor drawback, again.
After unboxing and during charging, you are advised to create an account and to register your Kiiroo products online. For one reason or another, this doesn’t go very smoothly. You must fill in the registration code of your products, but there was one only at the Pearl2 box. The account details doesn’t show what products have been registered, so up until today, I still have no clue if I just registered the Pearl2 or the entire set. Little point of improvement, Kiiroo guys!
The FeelConnect app
In previous versions, connecting the devises was kind of a hassle, so I have been told. But now there is a whole new free app. First you have to activate bluetooth. For that, you have to press a small stripe-like button on the Pearl2 for about 4 seconds and the on/off button on the Onyx2. Once the LED lights are blue, the app will be able to detect and select them.
Once that is done, you can go to the Feelme.com website to connect the app and your devices with online content. This is very easy, by just scanning a QR-code from the app. So far so good.
The ‘test drive’: Pearl2
Now the time has finally come to test the Pearl2 and Onyx2. Where shall we start? The possibilities seem endless.
The Kiiroo products have a number of capabilities:
- Bluetooth mode: to connect devises with other devices, with (VR) porn sites, or with webcam performers.
- Touch mode: the device will respond to touching
- Normal mode: for disconnected solo use.
We first tested the Pearl2, because it didn’t need charging as long as the Onyx2. There is just one very small control button (more like some kind of embossed stripe) and that is positioned directly above the LED light. You have to press the button for four seconds to enter bluetooth mode. The light will turn blue, but you won’t be able to see that, because your finger will be right on top of it. Bit strange.
I connected the Pearl2 with the app and the Feelme.com website. Next I chose a random porn video and … nothing. The Pearl2 did not respond to any of the videos. Checked the connection with the app and the website again. Everything seems in order, but no vibrations. It is also disappointing that you are not able to find a video to your device. It seems that most videos better fit with the Onyx2 masturbator. Anyway, whatever I tried, the Pearl2 did not react to the online content. I gave up.*
Then the Touch mode. When the Pearl2 is in Bluetooth mode (blue LED) and you press the control button again, the LED will turn white and the Pearl2 will react to touching it. Now, that’s kinda funny. When you stroke the shaft, the vibration changes. However, it seems more fun then it actually is, because the touch mode doesn’t work like you’d expect. Sometimes it keeps vibrating even long after you stopped touching it, and in some case you have to squeeze it a bit harder to get the same vibration than at other times. Let’s just say the touch sensors are likely to work better when you connect the Pearl2 with other devices.
Next, the ‘normal’ vibration patterns. The Pearl2 comes with five different patterns: 2 continuous (soft and hard) and 3 other patterns. When the Pearl2 is in touch mode and you press the control button, it will go to the first position. Every time you press the button again, it will go to the next position. After pressing six times however, you will return to bluetooth mode. That is quite annoying, because it that position it doesn’t vibrate, so you have to press two times to go beyond the touch mode and come back to the first vibration setting. That is a bit of a hassle, especially because the control button doesn’t work very well. When you toggle it in the heat of the moment this will definitely get you out of your concentration.
OK, the Pearl2 does vibrate quite well, even though it does make a strange high squeaky sound.
The ‘test drive’: Onyx2
After a little under 3 hours of charging (the advice is 4, but like I’ve got the patience for that) I finally can take the Onyx2 for a spin. Meanwhile I figured out how to assemble the sleeve. The ring that holds the sleeve in place, seems a little fragile. I wonder if it won’t break when you take it off a couple of hundreds of times?
Once it was connected to the app and to the Feelme.com website, I swiftly went to the videos. Bobbi Eden and Milena Star promise to give me a POV (Point of View) blowjob together, but … again nothing. This is so disappointing. What am I doing wrong? Everything seems in order. But, nope.*
So I decided to use one of the vouchers that gave me access to a number of free interactive videos at the Ufeel.tv website. I chose a video featuring Kayden Kross. It appeared that this was not just a video, but an application that was downloaded to my PC and that could be linked with the FeelConnect app through a QR-code. The application allowed me to watch several POV scenes and adjust the speed and the angle. It took a few moments, but suddenly the Onyx2 started to react to the movements in the video. I swiftly poured some water based lube in the sleeve and enjoyed the ride. Every now and again, the movements of the Onyx2 was not in sync with the video, but all in all it was a reasonable experience. The Onyx2 makes squeezing movements and with the image of Kayden in front of me, (with some imagination) it did seem a bit like I was actually having sex with her. The Onyx2 does make some mechanical sounds, but those did not at all disturb me, like other masturbators like the Autoblow2+ did.
Another possibility is to use the Onyx2 in the touch modus. The idea is to shove the sleeve over your erect penis and keep it in place, while your fingertips softly rub the control panel on the side. This way, you can easily increase (rub upwards) or decrease (rub down) the tempo. This was a nice experience, because there were no disruptions in the movements, like there were in the interactive mode with the video. By the way. the sleeve is extremely soft and supplied by Fleshlight.
The ‘test drive’: Local Connect
Yet another capability that I tested together with my partner, is linking the Onyx2 and the Pearl2 through the app. Both devices need to be connected to the app in bluetooth mode and with a swipe movement in the app, you can actually feel each others movements.
In this mode the bluetooth connection and the touch mode meet. When you stroke the shaft of the Pearl2 with your fingers, you actually feel it in the Onyx2. And when you touch the control panel of the Onyx2, the Pearl2 will start to vibrate. This is a very interesting experience that gives a whole new meaning to mutual masturbation. We used it as foreplay, because, well … if you are in the same room, you might just as well have sex, right?
It gets really exciting, however, when you are not in the same room. In that case both partners need to download the app and have their own device connected to it. You can send each other a code to connect the devices on a distance. Now you can have sex while you are physically in different parts of the world. It so happened that my partner had to go on a business trip to France. This functionality is really great when you have to be without your partner for some time. It wasn’t entirely without glitches, but it was a very unique way of having sex. Especially when you add a Skype connection for voice (through the PC, because on your mobile it will disturb your FeelConnect connection).
Conclusion
All in all I had to spend a lot of time reading manuals, charging, registering, connecting the devices to the app and the app to the website and downloading content and updates. I am not exaggerating when I say setting everything up cost me at least a couple of hours. Not exactly plug & play. Do your preparations long before you want to actually use the products, otherwise your ‘craving’ will pass rapidly. When all is set up, it does work like it should.
* It appeared that I could not use the Feelme.com site because of a bug. Kiiroo’s helpdesk was so kind to clarify this within a day and contacted me after a couple of days to ask if the problem was resolved. After the bug was corrected, it worked fine.
Teledildonics is most certainly a very interesting and fascinating development with many different applications. This Kiiroo set shows that. Because, next to all of the capabilities I described above, you can also use VR glasses to make things even more real. And on payment you can also interact with webcam performers.
Still, the user experience is less than perfect. It clearly shows that we are dealing with a ‘start-up’ and that there are still some things to improve. You need to be a little tech-savy and perhaps even a little of a sex-toy nerd, to see passed the shortcomings and even see the fun out of it.
The pros of the Kiiroo Couples Set (Pearl2 & Onyx2):
- Luxurious sex toys of high quality materials
- Promising opportunities for many exciting adventures
- Reasonable amount of content available (although mainly hetero-normative and vanilla)
- Whole new interactive experience
- Possibility to connect to other devices around the globe
- Also fit for same sex experiences
- The Pearl2 is waterproof and can be used in your bathtub or under the shower
- Easy to clean
The cons:
- The user experience is somewhat immature
- It just doesn’t work flawless (and sometimes not at all)
- The Onyx2 makes some noise and is therefor not very discreet
- The set and it’s products are relatively expensive and you need to pay extra for online content. This makes it a bit costly
- The Onyx2 is not waterproof and can not be used near water
There might be better sex toys out there, but just not with these interactive capabilities. Alright, it might not be flawless at times, but the technology is still under development. There are regular updates that you can download and install through the app, that (hopefully) will improve the overall experience.
I recommend the Kiiroo products mainly to early adopters, that want to have the latest top of the line sex toys and are curious into the future of interactive sex.
The Kiiroo Set is available at EasyToys or in our own shop.
