Japanese Netflix series 'The Naked Director' about porn legend Toru Muranishi

In 2018, a documentary appeared in Japan about a legendary porn producer from Japan: Toru Muranishi. This documentary shows how he started ambitious projects to survive in the industry. This month Netflix started a series that is based on the life of Muranishi: ‘The Naked Director’.

Japan’s most famous porn producer

Toru Muranishi was an innovative and controversial adult video director and producer from Japan. He was a pioneer in POV (Point Of View) shots. He was probably the most famous porn producer in the 1980s and 1990s in Japan. During his career he was arrested multiple times. His nickname was ‘The dirtiest of the industry’s dirty old men’. Allegedly Muranishi made over 3,000 films and shared his bed with over 7,000 women.

Now, his fame might become even bigger, now Netflix has released a Japanese drama series about his life. The role of Muranishi is played by singer and actor Takayuki Yamada.

A story so strange it has to be true

The Naked Director is a bout the rise of Muranishi’s production company and his relationship with other porn producers. Also, his relation with Kaoru Kuroki (porn star and sex therapist) is part of the story, as well as his revolutionary development of explicit sex in front of the camera.

“People have seen my asshole,” as Muranishi declares in the opening scene, “but I’m not embarrassed. To be human is to live as who you really are. In other words, adult videos show humanity itself.”

And so we also see women with hairy armpits.

This bizar story of the life of Muranishi is based on a true story that was also published in Japan in a book. Muranishi himself gave his blessing to the Netflix series.

Muranishi started as a door-to-door salesman of encyclopedias. In fact, he appeared to be rather good at it. He even succeeds in selling one to a gangster because it would make him a better criminal. But when he loses his job, he finds his wife at home with another man. Muranishi was not able to satisfy his wife sexually, so she found her luck at another man. This was the moment Muranishi realized that sex is important for everybody and he might be good at selling it. Sex sells!

The series shows an interesting view on Japan in the 80s and 90s and the rise of the Japanese adult industry (that was of much influence on the American porn industry).
