The Olympic games are coming and Japanese cities started to clean things up. First, convenience stores in the cities of Chiba and Osaka started to cover up the adult magazines to reduce the amount of sex the audience was seeing. Now Tokyo follows, because they expect that the number of tourists will grow due to the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020.
Ministop, a retailer with shops in Tokyo, announced to ban pornographic magazines from their stores. These adult magazines often have their own corner in the ‘konbini’ shops. There was a lot of criticism, because they usually stand next to the manga magazines that are often bought by minors.
Ministop announced 21st of November to ban porn from all their 2,245 in the country. They start on December, 1st in the city of Chiba, where their headquarters is based. The other stores will follow as of Januari 1st, 2018. Ministop is part of the bigger AEON concern, which is one of the country’s largest chain of supermarkets. Question is, whether other retailers, like FamilyMart, Lawson, or 7-Eleven will follow.
