There are roughly three types of lubricant: water based lubricant, oil based lubricant and silicone based lubricant. Silicone based lubricant is an interesting substance. It feels thick and remains effective for a long time. Below I’ll explain what silicone-based lube is, why it’s so great, and what my favorite brands are.

The advantages of silicone lubricant: safe and long-lasting

The biggest advantage of silicone based lubricant is that it works for a long time. Water-based lubricant evaporates or penetrates the skin, so you have to reapply it regularly. Silicone based lube does not penetrate the skin. A film layer remains, making it last up to 20 times longer.

Furthermore, it is odorless and it sticks much less than water-based lubricant.

In addition, silicone based lubricant is safe. Research has shown that it is not harmful to the skin cells, because it is not absorbed by the skin. If you are prone to fungi or infections, silicone based lube is always the better choice.

Always? Well, not always. Some manufacturers sometimes add fragrances, flavors, or other ingredients that can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you ever get allergic reactions from cosmetics or care products, always read the ingredient composition carefully and always test a little on the inside of your elbow before use. The fewer ingredients a silicone lubricant has, the kinder it is on your body.

Using silicone based lube

You can simply use silicone lubricant with a condom. There are even people who use silicone lubricant to polish shoes, to lubricate car door seals against freezing in the winter, or to protect the skin with a fresh tattoo.

But silicone lubricant is especially great stuff for sex. Because it lasts so long and is generally thicker than water-based lube, it is also great for rougher sex and anal sex. Since silicone lubricant does not dissolve in water, you can also use it for sex in the shower or bath. Be careful though, because if you spill on the floor, you could just slip.

You can also use a silicone-based lubricant as a massage oil. That works well, does not dry quickly and remains smooth for a long time. The only downside is that it quickly stains your bedding and you have to wash it off as it doesn’t soak into the skin.

The composition of silicone based lubricant

There are many types of silicone, which can also differ in terms of effectiveness. The most commonly used types are: dimethicone, cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, or polydimethylsiloxane.

A lubricant with the ingredient “Dimethicone” is an indication that it is a lubricant of high quality. It is also one of the most expensive ingredients, extracted from natural minerals.

Usually different types of liquid silicone are mixed to get the right viscosity and texture.

Compared to water-based lubricant, the ingredient list is very small. Usually it only contains two or three types of silicone. That is because silicone lubricant does not require preservatives and no ingredients are needed to ensure that the different ingredients do not evaporate or separate.

Is there nothing negative about silicone lubricant at all?

Every advantage has its disadvantage. Precisely because silicone lubricant does not dissolve in water, it is also more difficult to wash. To properly wash off silicone-based lubricant, it is best to use a washcloth or towel.

It will also stain bedding or your expensive designer sofa, which can be difficult to remove. On the other hand, you need less and it is a bit thicker, so you might also spill less.

Silicone lubricant is perfect for glass, metal, wood, stone, ceramic and ABS (hard plastic) sex toys. You cannot use silicone lubricant with TPE and TPR, because it will damage the material. Also watch out with silicone based lube in combination with silicone sex toys. It is often said that you should never use silicone based lubricant in combination with silicone sex toys. Because, it is said, that can affect your sex toy. That is possible, but that is not always the case. In general, you run less risk with high-quality items. A high-quality silicone lubricant is unlikely to have any effect on a sex toy made from high-quality silicone. The big problem is that you often have no idea what quality silicone is used in a sex toy. The statement ‘platinum grade silicone’ or ‘medical grade silicone’ is no guarantee.

In short, if you used a really good silicone-based lubricant (read: an expensive one) in combination with a sex toy made of high quality silicone (read: an expensive one), you would in principle run less risk. But unfortunately you don’t have a guarantee. Fortunately, more and more manufacturers are putting claims on their packaging, but even then that is not yet a guarantee. Play it safe and be very careful. For example, rub a small drop of lubricant on a part of your toy before use to see if a chemical reaction occurs.

Even though the ingredient composition may appear the same on a package, that does not mean that the lubricant is of the same quality. Below you can see my favorites:
