Believe it or not: Almost everyone masturbates. And regularly, too. For a while now, the stigma surrounding this topic has been significantly reduced. Although there are still many myths about the risks of masturbation, it is perfectly safe. Masturbation is in no way physically or emotionally harmful. In fact, masturbation is the ultimate form of safer sex – there is no risk of pregnancy or STDs. But then where does the persistent belief come from that it is possible to masturbate “too much” and that it can even have health consequences? We got to the bottom of it for you!
Masturbation habits
If you compare masturbation habits between men and women, there are some clear differences. Our own research (Dutch) shows that just over 40% of men do it daily or several times a day, compared to only 17% for women. The number of men who masturbate every day is twice that of women. Other studies show a similar picture. Womanizer, for example, shows that only 9% of women in Germany masturbate several times a week. Their survey also shows that 32% of men masturbate more than once a week. The number of women who masturbate less than once a month is twice the number of men. In our study it was 5% and with Womanizer it was even 24%.
Whether the figures are truthful remains to be seen for both surveys. It may be that respondents gave a socially desirable answer, where men may have been more likely to give a higher frequency and women may have given a lower one. Still, many people would rather not talk about this habit.
What is too much?
What becomes clear from the various studies is that masturbation habits vary from person to person. In any case, there is no medically recommended maximum for masturbation, so there is no need to be afraid of crossing a threshold.
So there is no such thing as “too much” masturbation, as long as your daily social or professional functioning does not suffer. However, this is rare. Just listen to your need and do it when you feel like it, whether you have a penis or vagina. If you notice that it does, consult your doctor.
In fact, many experts even argue that solo sex is really healthy. It can help reduce stress, sleep disturbances and, yes, it’s even good for your skin. It can even reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men.
It is possible, however, that if you masturbate frequently, you may get skin irritation from the friction. You can easily prevent this by using plenty of lubricant. If you have pain or irritation from masturbating, simply avoid rubbing that area until it feels better.
Some people masturbate more than once a day, some people masturbate occasionally, and some people never masturbate – they are all perfectly normal.
