It is widely accepted that if you watch porn a lot, you will build some kind of resistance. This means that you won’t get excited from ‘ordinary vanilla porn’, but you need more and more extreme stuff in order to get turned on. Unfortunately, not much research has been done about it, so we are not sure if that effect will occur. A recently published suggests that building some kind of resistance for porn is actually based on a myth.
The research was conducted in Croatia, among 2,035 persons that have watched ‘sexual explicit media’ or SEM (hence: porn) in the past year. Respondents were in the ages from 18 to 60 yo, 58% was female. They were asked how turned on they get from several porn genres. They got presented 27 different genres, varying from ‘amateur’ and ‘vaginal sex’ to some more extreme genres like ‘fetish’ and ‘bizarre’.
The research shows that respondents that got excited from less mainstream porn, got turned on from all forms of porn. This was specially true for men and non-hetero women. In other words: people that like extreme porn, also like mainstream porn. And that contradicts the belief that people who are into extreme porn have gotten resistant to mainstream porn.
People that do like extreme porn, have an equally satisfying sex life and don’t believe their interest is unhealthy.
What this research shows is that if you watch a lot of porn, you will not become resistant to it and will only be turned on by more extreme and kinky stuff. of course there are people that only get turned on by extreme porn, but that isn’t necessarily caused by their porn consumption. It may well be that these persons had a different sexual preference to begin with.
