Being a man is not easy. Do you want to look like a rugged caveman on the beach, or a member of ‘B-Brave’? It’s balancing between two extremes. That’s why body grooming – or taking care of a man’s body hair, including the precarious crown jewels – is something that is attracting increasing attention. To help you in your quest for the ultimate preparation for the beach season, we at NBRplaza have listed a few things for you.
Body hair is a matter of preference. Both yours and your partner’s. So it is advisable to ask his or her opinion too, before you go rigorous. Also bear in mind that bush hair has a camouflaging effect. You can make this work to your advantage in some cases too!
Chest
Take a good look in the mirror. Without hair, would you look good enough to be in the Abercrombie catalogue? Yes? In that case, you could go for shaving or waxing everything completely smooth. But let’s assume for a moment the average Dutchman, who has carefully cultivated a belly this winter and no longer has time to go to the gym to conjure his six-pack out from under it. For them, and for anyone with a beard, a little chest hair can actually do wonders. Trim your hair with a trimmer in the direction of hair growth and go all the way down. Do so dry and then moisturise with a body lotion.
The less hair, the more you see of your body. Therefore, in many cases, it is totally fine to leave some out. But do match your body hair to your facial hair. If you have little to no body hair, then it is fine to trim or completely remove your chest hair as well. But if you have a substantial beard, then it is actually better to leave your chest hair a little longer as well.
Back
Everyone, both the beautician we asked and our female friends, agreed: hair on your back and shoulders is never good! End of discussion. Unless you have a very sweet partner who is willing to wax your back, it might be better to make an appointment at a hair removal studio. After all, your back is the easiest and least painful place to get a good waxing. It is the most requested treatment at a hair removal studio.
If you are nevertheless a bit squeamish, you might want to take a paracetamol or two against the pain prior to your appointment. Especially if you are going for the first time, or if it has been a long time since your back was last waxed. If you have a lot of hair growth on your back, it is recommended to have your back waxed once every four to six weeks.
Arms, legs and armpits
If you are very hairy, very fond of a precisely depilated body, or if you are a cyclist, it is not enough to just wax your chest and back. Here on the editorial staff, we agree: as a man, leave your armpits alone. Really. Don’t. Unless there are big bunches of hair coming out of your T-shirt or shirt. Then do. Use a trimmer on the longest setting to thin things out a bit, or use a comb and scissors (put the comb in the hair to protect the skin and cut the hair along the scissors).
Many men want hairless upper arms, to better show off their biceps and shoulders. Just make sure there is no weird hard separation between your hairy underarms and your depilated upper arm. That would be odd. Use a trimmer without an attachment starting from the shoulder and use a short attachment as you get closer to the elbow.
Not everyone can appreciate depilated men’s legs. But if you are particularly hairy, use a trimmer to reduce the volume a bit.
The third armpit
First of all, you need to consider how far you wish to depilate yourself in the area normally covered by your pants. If you just don’t want shag to come out of your bottom, it may suffice to put on your bottom and remove the protruding hairs with one trimmer. What is visible to other beachgoers should be about as long as your chest hair.
If you want to make the tree look taller, cut away the bushes
It is good to cut back your pubic hair considerably. Whether you also want to remove your belly and leg hair is a matter of taste. But getting a trimmer past your pubic hair on your lower abdomen is never wrong.
Nothing says good grooming better than shaving your balls. This is a precarious job and we don’t need to explain that it should be done with some caution. In an earlier post, we explained the best way to shave your balls. Use plenty of shaving cream and a sharp blade. Be patient and make short little shaving movements.
Don’t forget the penis itself too. Hair growth often doesn’t stop at the stem of the penis. Removing those hairs will make your penis look much nicer. Hold up your penis, but don’t pull too hard on the skin. Use small shaving strokes in the direction of hair growth. Don’t go over the same area with your blade too often.
Many men forget to shave the perineum, even though a lot of hair grows there. Use the trimmer with an attachment for this. You want to avoid getting a lot of stubble here, as this is a part of your body that moves all day long (while walking, cycling, sitting). So consider before you begin.
Also consider waxing your third armpit. It sounds painful, but remember that hair growing back after shaving causes a lot of irritation. It stings and itches. But after waxing, hairs will be much softer and take much longer to come back. Also remember that wounds you get from shaving can bleed very badly in that area, not to mention ingrown hairs. You won’t have such problems if you get it waxed.
Butt
A man with hair on his butt is never attractive. Use a trimmer without an attachment to remove all hair from your buttocks. And then immediately go a little further. Put one leg on a chair and put a mirror on the floor to get a good view of what you are doing. Shave away as many hairs growing between your buttocks as possible, using a trimmer without an attachment. Or, have your butt hairs removed if you are at the salon to wax your back anyway.
Hair removal products
There are a number of hair removal products for the real do-it-yourselfer:
To shorten hairs, it is best to use a trimmer. If you also want to trim your intimate area, it is good to get a trimmer that is not too wide, so you can easily reach all places. Also get a trimmer with an attachment, for the hairs that need to stay a bit longer.

Don’t like shaving and waxing goes too far for you? Then use depilatory powder specifically for your intimate area. Many depilatory products contain ingredients that are less suitable for intimate areas and sensitive skin. Intimate Hair Removal, on the other hand, is especially suitable for hair removal in the intimate areas. It is easy and quick to do yourself at home, even on areas where razors can hardly reach. Mix the powder with lukewarm water, apply to the skin to be depilated and wait 7-10 minutes. Then rinse with lukewarm water. You can use this powder for the bikini line, buttock/groin area, pubic area and male genitals. Painless and without irritation. For a smooth and clean result.
We also don’t need to explain that you shouldn’t spray after shave on your intimate parts, right? Rather, take care of your intimate parts after shaving with products specially designed for that purpose, like the Pjur Med After Shave. Pjur Med After Shave is suitable for all body parts. It does not burn and soothes and nourishes stressed skin. The aftershave is dermatologically tested, neutral in taste and smell. Alcohol and perfume free.
