I am regularly asked what the meaning of a term is that has to do with kink and fetishes. Therefore, I have compiled a list of terms and their meanings. Here and there are links to further explanations elsewhere on this blog. Earlier, I published a list of BDSM related terms.

Kinks & fetishes
A kink occurs when there are unconventional sexual practices, fantasies or concepts. Anything out of the ordinary can be considered a kink. Fetishism is a form in which sexual pleasure is experienced from certain objects or rituals. In fetishism, a fixation for an object, an action, or a (non sexual) body part is central. That object is then called the fetish. The person who has a fetish for such an object is called a fetishist. Read more about the difference between a kink and a fetish here.
There are three primary types of fetishes:
Partialism: Erotic arousal by body parts not usually considered sexual.
Objectophilia: Sexual and sometimes romantic feelings for an object.
Hygrophilia: Excitement by body fluids, usually one in particular.
List of kinks & fetishes
Some of the fetishes in the list below are taboo, or sometimes downright forbidden. This is then explicitly mentioned.

| Acrotomophilia | Amputees | Acrotomophilia concerns the sexual attraction to persons with an amputation or similar disability. The word literally means to love a severed limb and comes from the Greek. The desire of the fetishist may have to do with the helplessness of the amputee, the need to dominate the amputee, or to be subservient and caring. For others, it may have to do with the appearance and phallic nature of the amputee’s stump itself. Apotemnophilia is the flipside: a dangerous fixation on becoming an amputee yourself. |
| Agalmatophilia | Dolls | A form of object sexuality; sexual attraction to statues or dolls, such as mannequins, or statues. Someone with a doll fetish may enjoy just fantasising about sex with a doll. Some may want to imitate a statue themselves or turn someone else into one during role play. |
| Alvinolagnia | Belly | Fetish where a person is sexually attracted to the midriff or abdomen. The area of a woman’s hips and waist is an area of great attraction for many. Women often respond to the belly fetish with belly chains, navel piercings, belly tattoos and belly shirts. |
| Alvinophilia | Navel | Navel Fetish: Attraction to the human belly button. Tickling, kissing, licking and drinking champagne from the navel are among the possibilities. |
| Apodysophilia | Exhibitionism | Exhibitionism (pencilling) is the exposure of one’s own genitals or other sexual body parts in a public setting, or having to expose oneself to other people. It can also involve having sex in an environment where you may be caught. Public indecency can lead to criminal prosecution. If apodysophilia results in exposing yourself to people who do not want it, it is highly undesirable and punishable. But with some creativity you can be an exhibitionist without breaking the law (for example by going to a swingers club). |
| Apotemnophilia | Amputation | Apotemnophilia a fetish for wanting to become an amputee. This is a dangerous fixation, in which the person has an extreme desire to be disabled by the loss of a healthy limb. Surgeons are extremely reluctant to amputate healthy body parts. If they receive a request, the patient is referred to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist examines whether there is any serious mental suffering. A related phenomenon is acrotomophilia, the attraction to people who are missing limbs or have other disabilities. |
| Aquaphilia | Water | Water lovers get excited by people swimming or having sex in water, or under water. A water fetish can be specifically about showers and bathtubs, the water itself, or even sexual arousal from flooding! |
| Arachnophilia | Spiders | Many people have a phobia of spiders (arachnophobia), but arachnophiles enjoy sexual play with a spider. Dangerous spiders and spiders that can bite give a special thrill and adrenaline rush. |
| Auto-erotic asphyxiation | Suffocation (strangulation) | Breath play with a partner is dangerous enough, but some people practice breathlessness just to increase their orgasms while masturbating. This is called autoerotic asphyxiation (AEA). A rope or bag is used to temporarily cut off the air supply. The resulting euphoric high can increase pleasure for some. However, this form of activity is extremely dangerous and costs many people their lives. |
| Autonepiophilia | Infatilism | Paraphilic infantilism includes what is more commonly referred to as an adult baby fetish. Those who practice infantilism may enjoy role-playing as babies and caregivers, complete with nappies, feeding bottles, dummies, or even giant cots and playpens. Adult babies who like to wear nappies are referred to as AB/DL. (Adult Baby Diaper Lover). |
| Ballooning | Balloons | People with a balloon fetish are called ‘Looners’. They get excited by the sight of a balloon, or the sound of it, or its changing shape as it inflates, deflates, or breaks. For the latter, there are ‘poppers’ and ‘non-poppers’. |
| BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) | Obese women | Fat fetishism: Fat fetishism is an attraction to overweight or obese people. The desire depends on the size of the person and for some, bigger is always better. Within fat fetishism there are also sub-fetishes, such as feederism, gaining, stuffing, and padding. Someone with a strong preference for larger women might call this a BBW fetish. |
| Big Dick Fetish | Large penis | Size does matter for people with this fetish. They like really big and sometimes big is not even big enough. For others, their fetish is even more specific, as in the case of the big black cock fetish. See also: Small penis humiliation. |
| Big labia fetish | Large labia | One of the many fetishes on our list that is all about ‘bigger is better’. The labia are the outer folds of a woman’s vulva and include the labia minora (inner) and the labia majora (outer). Someone with a fetish for large labia may have a preference for labia that protrude further. Part of this may be the vacuuming of the labia to make them even bigger. |
| Bondage | Restriction of movement | When we talk about a bondage fetish, we are talking about people who need some form of bondage in order to feel sexually satisfied. A person with a bondage fetish can be either submissive (bound) or dominant (binder). Bondage can take many forms. |
| Capnolagnia | Smoking | Smoking fetish: My French teacher in high school used to say that smoking is a disguised reference to oral sex. The way someone opens their mouth to insert their cigarette, the billowing smoke that is blown through pinched lips… These fetishists get sexual arousal from watching others smoke. This can be very specific, for example smoking a cigar, a filter cigarette, or a pipe. |
| Cheirophilia | Hands | Hand Fetish: Although hand fetishes are rare, (rarer than foot fetishes), a sexual interest in hands is not surprising. Hands are involved in all sorts of sexual activities to begin with, such as hand jobs, touching and caressing, fingering, and spanking. Someone with a kinky for hands may focus specifically on the fingers or palm, or may get excited by watching someone’s hands perform a certain task, even non-sexual acts. |
| Chemsex | Drugs | Chemsex started as a sexual subculture within the gay community. It usually involves the use of GHB, crystal meth and other stimulants that reduce inhibitions and increase stamina. Chemsex parties can last for days and involve multiple partners who all partake of the drugs. Also occurs at swingers parties. Gay or straight, drug-related kinks carry risks. |
| Claustrophilia | Small spaces | Claustrophobes find the idea of being locked up in a small, narrow space sexually arousing. This can be alone, or with a partner. Claustrophilia has its roots in submissive helplessness, the element of bondage and restraint, and even the effect on a person’s breathing. |
| Cosplay | Dressing up | Although a cosplayer in general is not necessarily kinky, there are still people who find this way of dressing up erotic. They may have ritualised the make-up and preparation needed for a cool costume, and get excited by the costume itself or how it looks/feels on their body. Regardless of whether it’s a fetish, there are a lot of overtly sexy cosplay designs out there. The point at which cosplay becomes a real fetish is probably when arousal is only possible when dressed or with a partner in cosplay clothes. See also Furry. |
| Coprophilia and coprophagia | Poop / excrement | Poo fetish: Coprophilia, also known as scatophilia, involves becoming sexually aroused by faeces and excrement. A variant of the scat fetish is coprophagia, which is a fetish for eating poo. |
| Coulrophilia | Clowns | Some people get sexually excited by clowns and characters like jokers and mimes. For some, it is the make-up; the sensation of applying it, and the way it conceals one’s identity. A fetishist may also enjoy the non-serious nature of a clown. But it can also be the costume. |
| Crush fetish | Crushing | Someone with this fetish is sexually aroused by the crushing of objects, insects and/or animals and sometimes even people (trample fetish). Usually the crushing is done by feet which makes a foot fetish/crush fetish crossover possible. Soft crushing refers to the crushing of objects such as food or invertebrates. Hard crushing refers to the crushing of vertebrates (which most people consider coarse and cruel). |
| Cuckoldry | Being cheated | A cuckold derives sexual pleasure from knowing that his partner is having sex with others. It may be an arrangement whereby a woman has sex with a ‘bull’, sometimes in his presence. |
| Dacryphilia | Crying | Crying Fetish: Seeing or hearing someone cry can be exciting for some, for whatever reason. Don’t just think of a dominant person eliciting tears from a submissive. For some, a sexual scenario is not even necessary. They can already get aroused by seeing their partner cry when they get emotional or just watch a sad movie. |
| Dendrophilia | Trees and plants | Dendrophilia means ‘love of trees’. A tree fetishist worships trees for their virile and phallic symbolism. As this fetish is primarily about a sexual attraction to trees, a person with a tree fetish may even have sexual contact with trees and plants. Some prefer to simply have sex in a forest environment, surrounded by the trees. A related fetish, xylophilia, refers to arousal by wood. This can clearly overlap with the tree fetish, but a xylophile need not fall specifically on trees, but simply on the wood itself. |
| Devoteeism | Disabled persons | Disability fetish: Devotism is a fetishistic sexual attraction to disability. Devotees, or devs, may appreciate a particular disability, such as those who need a wheelchair, or someone with an amputated limb. A fetish for the disabled is not necessarily about control or domination as you might expect, but can sometimes be an unusual fondness for what the fetishist considers sexy. |
| Diaperism | Diapers | Diaper lovers and fetishists love the feeling of wearing nappies. Some do it secretly. Some do it alone, others with a partner, as in age play. Some enjoy peeing and defecating in their nappies, while for others, simply wearing the nappy is enough. |
| Emetophilia | Vomit | Vomit Fetish: Emetophilia is a paraphilia in which a person becomes sexually aroused by vomiting or watching their partner vomit. In some cases, vomiting is induced by oral sex (deep throat) or by arousing the gag reflex with the fingers. |
| Eproctophilia | Farting | Fart fetish: most people don’t think about farting during sex. But an eproctophile wants nothing more than for you to do so. Especially when their face is nice and close during fellatio or cunnilingus. |
| Erotophonophilia | Murder | Erotophonophilia is sexual arousal or gratification through the killing of another person. This type of murder is also known as ‘lust murder’ and can include murder during sexual activity, mutilation, cannibalism and necrophilia. This form of murder fetishism is most common among serial killers and is, of course, prohibited. |
| Farming / breeding | Breeding | Although breeding (getting pregnant and having babies) is quite normal biologically, for some the idea of getting pregnant or impregnating a woman is a fetish. Some concentrate on the act of impregnation and the thrill of sex without birth control, while others choose to play a responsible role. |
| Feeding fetish | Body weight | For the feeding fetish, it takes two, because the flip side of this kink is the gaining fetish (see there). These fetishists, more often but not exclusively men, enjoy big women and want to help make them even bigger. They may feed their partner directly, or they may encourage weight gain and facilitate it by administering food so that the other continues to grow. There is certainly dominance and submission here, through the control of the partner’s food intake and the subsequent helplessness that can occur when she becomes a SSBBW (Super Sized Big Beautiful Woman). |
| Formicophilia | Insects | Insects are often a phobia for humans, but in the case of formicophiles, nothing is hotter. Insect fetish usually involves the tickling sensation of insects crawling over the skin and possibly biting or stinging. Insects can be applied to the genitals and other erogenous zones, or to the whole body. |
| Forniphilia | Human furniture | Fetish for human furniture: Sexually aroused by the idea of being someone else’s stool/coffee table/board. Forniphilia may involve bondage, nudity, sexual submission, forms of BDSM play, or none of these things. The most important thing about this fetish is its clear objectification. |
| Freckles and birthmarks | Freckles and birthmarks | Excitement for people with freckles, or just the freckles themselves. The interest may lie in the patterns of different moles and freckles, or in the beauty of ‘imperfection’. |
| Frotteurism | Rubbing in public | Frotteurism, or frotteuristic disorder, is a fetishistic desire to rub oneself, (usually the pelvic area or penis), in public against strangers who do not consent. This can be considered sexual assault and is therefore a criminal offence. |
| Fur Fetish | Fur | Much of the fur fetish seems to revolve around the love of, and sexual arousal by, fur coats in particular. A woman in fur is glamorous, but for many it is the fur itself that excites them. Not to be confused with Furry (see there) |
| Furry Fetish | Animal costume | “Furries” are part of a fairly large subculture of people who like to dress up in full animal costumes. For some, this kind of cosplay is just a matter of having fun, but for others it has reached a fetish level. A furry fetishist will want to embody his or her “fursona” during sex, while others find dressing up as anthropomorphic animals the height of sexiness. |
| Gagging | Gagging | A gag fetish involves a person – usually a woman – gagging on her partner’s cock or fingers as they enter her throat. Some men find it horny when the partner struggles to take the entire penis in the mouth/throat. There is also and aspect of humiliation and submission. |
| Gaining (feederism) | Body wheight | In a feederism (or feedism) relationship you have two roles: the feeder and the feeder, or gainer. To make this work, the gainer probably has a gaining fetish, a kink that gives pleasure in seeing their own body weight increase. Humiliation may be at play, or simply the submissiveness of letting someone else determine what you eat and how you look. |
| Gerontophilia | Elderly | The grandpa & grandma fetish is a sexual attraction to older people. Gerontophiles may have had an early sexual experience with a much older person, which shapes their desires. |
| Hebephilia | Young adolescents | Hebephilia is a sexual preference for children in early adolescence, usually between the ages of 11 and 14. Acting in this way is not only criminal but also harmful to the victims. |
| Hematolagnia | Blood | Blood fetish: A person with haematolagnia is sexually aroused by blood and enjoys blood play during sex. For some this kink is visual and for others it may be the feel, smell and even taste of blood that does it. Either way, a blood fetish is risky because of things like cutting and bleeding and the possible pooling of bodily fluids. Blood fetishism can involve playing with knives, cutting, up to the blood of menstruation (menophilia, see there). |
| Hierophilia | Religious objects | Hierophilia refers to fantasies and sexual arousal caused by religious images and rituals, sacred objects, or having sex in a religious environment such as a church. |
| High Heels Fetish | High-heeled shoes | High heels have long been associated with sex. High heels change the wearer’s posture, making legs and buttocks more tense. Heels are associated not only with femininity, but also with power and dominance. Some have this kink in combination with a foot fetish. |
| Hybristophilia | Criminals | While fetish crime is a real thing (think breaking into someone’s house to steal their panties), in hybristophilia we are talking about a fetish for sexual involvement with a criminal. These fetishists seek a partner with a criminal past or someone who is still engaged in criminal activities. This fetish is also known as Bonnie and Clyde Syndrome. |
| Hypnokink | Hypnosis | Erotic hypnosis, sometimes called ‘hypnokink’, is the use of hypnosis to enhance sexual feelings. In hypnosis fetishism, the hypnosis itself is the arousing factor. Hypnosis fetishism is similar to mind control fetishism. The hypnotised person gives up control, to be at the mercy of their hypnotist. Sometimes there is also role playing (because not everyone can hypnotise). |
| Incest | Next of kin | Incest is taboo for many good reasons. However, the very fact that it is taboo leads some people to have persistent, fetishistic thoughts and desires surrounding incest. They get excited at the idea of observing or participating in sexual acts between family members, such as mother and son. Incest is a very popular fantasy, given all the incest porn out there. Fantasies are fine, as long as it stays that way. In the Netherlands, by the way, incest is not forbidden. It is reprehensible, though. |
| Katoptronophilia | Mirrors | Katoptronophiles derive pleasure from looking in mirrors during sex, masturbation, or while performing other sexually arousing acts. |
| Klismaphilia | Enema | Fetish for enemas: Enema lovers get a kick out of enemas. It may be the smell and feel of the rubber or other materials used for enemas, or the sensation of a swollen body when water is injected into the anus. Some people want to give an enema, while most prefer to be the recipient and often do it alone. |
| Knismolagnia | Tickling | Knismolagnia is a fetish for tickling. There are many sub-sets of this kink. Pteronphilia, for example, is sexual arousal from being tickled with feathers, and titillagnia is the pleasure of tickling others. Knismolagnia is a fetish that involves physical sensations, control versus helplessness, and the associated pleasure and laughter. It can also be a form of ‘torture’ in a BDSM scene. |
| Lactophilia | Breastfeeding | Lactation Fetish: Lactophilia manifests as sexual arousal at the sight of a woman breastfeeding, a desire to breastfeed, and/or the simple desire to have sex with a breastfeeding or pregnant woman. Lactation fetishism can become the focus of an Adult Breastfeeding Relationship, (or Adult Baby Relationship), because erotic lactation is a perfect match with infantilism. The lactation kink is generally a fetish for men, but there are also women with lactation kinks. |
| Latex fetish | Latex clothing | Latex is a kinky, shiny, tight material that accentuates all the curves of the wearer. Latex is used for all kinds of fetish wear, including dresses, gloves, stockings, etc. A love of latex becomes a latex fetish when the presence of latex, either in clothing form or as accessories, is required for sexual gratification. |
| Leather fetish | Leather | For the real enthusiast, there is no substitute for leather. It has a distinctive smell and feels smooth, rough or downy in the case of suede. Unlike PVC and other fake leathers, leather is breathable and can get a perfect fit through wear and use over time. It is an iconic material from which clothing, belts, cuffs and whips are made. |
| Parthenophilia | Virgins | A parthenophile has a fetish for virgins. This sexual desire can lead a parthenophile to specifically seek out virgins for sex. Sex with a virgin can give a feeling of power, or the thrill of being the first and kind of tutor to an inexperienced person (harmatophilia is, by the way, a fetish for inexperienced partners. The fetish can become problematic as soon as the parthenophile is involved in trafficking virgins or some other form of abuse. A better and safe option is to role-play. |
| Macrophilia | Giants | Macrophilia is a kink for giants or giantesses. A man may fantasise about a woman who is much larger than life, making him feel insignificant in comparison. The woman is dominant, and the fantasy may even involve him being eaten or crushed by such a woman. |
| Maiesiophilia | Pregnancy | Pregnancy Fetish: Getting excited by a pregnant woman, because of the bulging belly, enlarged breasts, but also being fertile. A pregnancy fetish can go beyond appearance. It may involve conception, breastfeeding, or even childbirth in particular. |
| Maschalagnia | Arm pits | Armpit Fetish: The smell, the sweat, the hair and the vulnerability are all aspects of the armpit fetish. For some, an armpit is as kissable, lickable and fuckable as a vagina. |
| Mechanophilia | Vehicles | For many people, cars are sexy. But someone with a car fetish has more than a basic desire to drive a sleek racing car. A mechanohile may want to have sex with a car, or even fall in love with a car! The term mechanophilia actually refers to a fetish for machines outside of cars, including motorbikes, planes, trains, etc. Sometimes this fetish goes hand-in-hand with the car crash fetish and a fetish for speed. |
| Medical fetish | Medical | Medical fetish is a popular fetish, but it can take many forms. In general, this fetish involves the situations, instruments, examinations and environments related to medical treatment, such as enema cups, plaster casts, temperature measuring, anaesthesia, catheterisation, medical masks, uniforms, and much more. Someone with this fetish may enjoy doctor/patient role-playing. |
| Menophilia | Menstruation | Menstrual Fetish: There are guys who refuse to have sex with a woman who has her period. There are guys who are totally cool with it. And then there are menstrual fetishists who look for menstruating women to have sex with. For them, menstrual blood is exciting and going down on a bleeding partner is the ultimate fantasy. |
| Microphilia | Small people | A fetish for small people, or in some cases small body parts, is known as microphilia (the opposite of macrophilia). Sometimes it involves the desire to be submissively small (insignificant). Conversely, the fetishist may become aroused by fantasising about others being small or shrinking before their eyes. |
| Mother fetish | Mother role playing | At first glance, you might think that a mother fetish has everything to do with the kink of adult baby role-playing and nappy-loving. In some cases this is the case, but many mother fetishes have nothing to do with infantilism. Just think of the popularity of MILFs, and also kinks that revolve around pregnancy and breastfeeding. A mother fetish revolves around a dominant woman – a MomDom – who lovingly nurtures and sometimes punishes. |
| Mucophilia | Mucus | Mucus Fetish: Mucophilia is the fetish of mucus lovers. This fetishist derives pleasure from seeing someone sneeze, pick their nose, spit out mucus, cough up mucus, or do any of these things themselves. |
| Mummification | Lock up | Mummification is a form of bondage and BDSM play. It has nothing to do with ancient Egypt, but everything to do with bondage in such a way that the entire body is completely wrapped up, so that no movement is possible. The materials used vary from plastic wrap and bondage tape to bandages and plaster. |
| Nasophilia | Nose | Nose fetish: A nose fetish may involve a strong preference for a certain shape or size of nose, or a kink for penetrating the nostrils. In the field of BDSM, there is a kind of Japanese nose torture/abuse in which a hook is used. Nose lust can even take the form of a fetish for nose licking, or nasolingus! |
| Nebulophilia | Smoke and fog | A nebulophile is stimulated by smoke and fog. A walk through thick, dense fog is the ultimate aphrodisiac! Because fog is not a daily occurrence, there are other ways for nebulophiles to enjoy themselves. For example, with dry ice. They are interested in the movement of smoke, which envelops, caresses or swallows bodies. |
| Necrophilia & Necrozoofilia | Sex with dead bodies | Necrophilia is a paraphilia involving sexual attraction and sexual acts involving dead bodies. Necrozoophilia applies to dead animals. Necrophilia is punishable by law. |
| Oculolinctus | Eye ball | Eyeball Licking Fetish: Oral sex with an eye. It has to do with the vulnerability of the eye and trusting someone enough to hold it open and touch it with their tongue. |
| Odaxelagnia | Biting | Bite fetish: Getting excited by biting, sometimes as part of SM (sadomasochism). Sexual stimulation and satisfaction may come from biting or being bitten. When a bite fetish goes beyond nibbling and involves the possibility of blood collection, it requires some careful safety considerations. |
| Odontophilia | Teeth | Tooth fetish: A tooth fetish can take various forms, such as becoming sexually aroused by the sight of foreign teeth, having the desire to lick a partner’s teeth, or becoming aroused by tooth extraction. For some odontophiles, there is overlap with other kinks, such as bite fetishes, vampire fetishes and even dental fetishism (subgroup of medical fetish). Mouth spreaders are a popular item among such fetishists. |
| Omorashi | Holding back urination | Fetish of urination: Omorashi is about wetting yourself, or more specifically, the desperate need to pee. This fetish involves peeing in your trousers, or desperately trying not to. For some it is about a strong need to pee yourself and for others it is about seeing others struggle with their urge. |
| Onychophilia | Nails | Someone with a nail fetish may be excited by the nails themselves or may be more interested in the feeling of those nails scratching their back. The latter is known as amychophilia. |
| Pantyhose fetish | Panty hoses, nylons and stockings | Good tights are like airbrushes for the legs; they perfect the tone and shape of a woman’s legs, adding shine and a smooth silhouette. As with underwear fetishism, this can involve wearing nylons yourself, or just touching, smelling, collecting them. |
| Panty liners fetish | Panty liners | A panty liner is a thin, absorbent piece of fabric worn in underwear (a thinner version of a sanitary pad), to keep underwear clean, during the last days of menstruation. A person with a panty-hose fetish loves used panty liners because of the intimacy (because it was close to a vagina) and the smell. |
| Pedophilia | Prepubertal children | Paedophilia is a paraphilia and a psychiatric disorder. Paedophiles have sexual urges, fantasies and/or behaviours involving prepubescent children. To be classified as a paedophile, the attraction to children must be exclusive and primary. Paedophilia is punishable by law. |
| Pet play | Pet role playing | People with this fetish like to take on the role of a pet, for example a puppy. The human pet is submissive to its master, dependent on them for food (served on the floor), and desirous of the affection bestowed by an owner. Animal role-playing has a lot to do with dominance and submission. |
| Plucheophilia | Plush animals | Many adults still love teddy bears. Some even sleep with them every day. But plushophiles prefer to make a hole in it and have sex with their favourite cuddly toy. Or they rub their genitals with it. Ursusagalmatophilia is a subfetish for teddy bears, by the way. |
| Podophilia | Feet | Foot fetish: Foot fetishism is probably one of the most popular kinks. People with this fetish can find feet (or shoes) almost anywhere. Some simply crave the soles of their feet or long to kiss and lick a pair of dainty toes. For others, their foot fetish moves into BDSM territory, where worshipping at the feet of a Mistress or Master is a form of submission. |
| Ptaerophilia | Sneezing | Sneeze fetish: A fetish for sneezing is within reach for the enthusiast. You can easily find YouTube videos of people making themselves sneeze for your pleasure.
