A long time ago I read some works by the Belgian author Hugo Raes. In one of his books – I can’t exactly remember which one thought – the main character is given the challenge of giving an orgasm to a woman. However, there is one but: he can only touch her nipples. That fragment fascinated me and I kept wondering if that could be possible, or whether it was more of an ‘urban legend’. But neuro-scientists and experience experts agree: a nipple orgasm – or nipplegasm – does exists!
What is a nipple orgasm or nipplegasm?
The nipples are an important erogenous zone, both for women and men. Yet they sometimes seem like a neglected orphaned child. And that’s a shame. Because the nipple (or the areola mammae nipple complex) is an area with more than 800 nerve endings. And we all know that playing with nipples can be erotic. A 2006 study shows that 82% of women and 52% of men found it sexually exciting when they played with their nipples.
Another study from 2011 mapped out how the nipples are connected to the brain. It showed that stimulating the nipples activates the same part of our brain than when you stimulate the clitoris (or the penis). It is precisely because of this that it is not so difficult to imagine that a nipple orgasm should be possible. Right?
If you stimulate nipples, the hypothalamus – which, in addition to a number of other functions, also produces chemicals that make us angry, happy, or horny – makes oxytocin. This is a hormone that gives us a sense of commitment and pleasure. Oxytocin is also a substance that causes muscles to contract during orgasm. If that substance is only sufficiently produced, you can experience an orgasm. For one it feels like a little sigh, for the other it is very intense. And everything in between.
How to experience a nipplegasm?
It is not known whether a nipple orgasm is for everyone. Little scientific research has been done, but the estimate is that 15% to 29% are able to get an orgasm by stimulating the nipples exclusively and only.
To get a nipple orgasm, the same applies as to any other orgasm: It is not a goal in itself. Still we do have some tips:
- Do kegel exercises while stimulating the nipples. In addition to the benefits that doing kegel exercises already have, they can also help you to feel the muscle contractions better during the nipple orgasm.
- Use your imagination. Research has shown that thinking about sex induces the same brain activity than actually doing sex. Sex is to a large extent between the ears. Perhaps more than between our legs.
- Don’t just stimulate the nipples. If you alternately stimulate the nipples and other erogenous zones (for example the clitoris or the penis) you increase the stimulus of the brain, because the ‘wiring’ ends up in the same place.
- Massage the areola (the pigmented part around the nipple) by turning circles around it. You can do this with your fingertips, with your mouth or tongue, or with a toy. It is even more fun if your partner does that. This stimulates blood circulation and your nipples become more sensitive.
- Then you shift the focus to the nipples themselves. Rub or pinch. The nipples will harden and erect. The harder the nipples are, the more sensitive they are to stimulation.
- Now increase the pressure. You should now also notice that the genitalia of the person whose nipples are stimulated are also starting to respond; the clitoris starts to swell, the vagina becomes moist, or the penis starts to become erect. Breathing can also become heavier.
- The more excited you – or the person with whom you do this – become, the more pressure you can exert. Squeeze a little harder, gently pull on the nipples, suck on it …
- If the nipples are extremely sensitive, do not stop. But do not continue to run at full steam. Relieve the pressure every now and then and then increase the pressure again. It may take a while (sometimes 20 minutes or more) before an orgasm begins to occur. So be patient. Play with the nipple as if it were a clitoris or a penis.
- If necessary, also use some lubricant to prevent irritation of the skin.
- Use specific nipple toys, such as nipple clamps, suction cups or vibrators.
