Recent research published in ‘Men and Masculinities’ shows that men in steady relationships use vibrators to improve their joint sex life. The study provides insight into men’s perceptions of the impact of vibrator use on their own and their partner’s sex lives. To this end, 49 men (aged 25 to 58) were surveyed. Specifically, the study dealt with so-called “couples vibrators“, which the couples were given for six weeks at their disposal. They were given instructions on how and how often to use the couple vibrator.

Couples vibrator

A couples vibrator is intended to be used bij a couple. And with couple, they mean a hetero sexual couple, consisting of a man and a woman.

The term “couples vibrator” is a collective term for all kinds of vibrators that you can use together. The most well-known are the ‘U’-shaped couple vibrators, of which one part goes into the vagina and thus vibrates against the G-spot as well as the penis during penis-in-vagina sex. The other part then comes against the clitoris. In this study, the couples were given such a U-shaped couple vibrator.

Although the majority of sex toys are used for masturbation, vibrators are also a great way to enhance the experience during sex with your partner. With innovations in sex toys, there is a greater selection of toys that specifically cater to this.

Reluctance

Yet straight men are often somewhat reluctant to use sex toys such as vibrators during sex with their partner. For example, some men see a vibrator as a threat or sometimes find the size of a toy intimidating, thinking that their own penis might fall short (no pun intended). This study shows that these men are wrong and could be missing out on something.

The advantages of a couples vibrator

Most men (71%) said that the couple vibrator had improved pleasure. Further, 88% said they planned to continue using the toy after the study ended.

According to the study, the biggest benefits of using the couple vibrator were:

Physical pleasure

Most men said that using the device felt good. For example, they enjoyed the extra sensation caused by vibrations. Others, on the other hand, liked having their hands free to use for other types of stimulation.

Partner’s pleasure

Most men said that the vibrator improved their partner’s pleasure. For example, it was easier for their partners to reach orgasm and sometimes to have more intense orgasms. When the partner enjoys sex more, it also enhances the man’s pleasure.

Novelty and variety

Many men felt that using the vibrator itself was fun and that it increased arousal by adding a new element to sex. Many also said that using the vibrator provided an easy opportunity to continue foreplay longer.

Intimacy

Finally, most men said that the couple vibrator improved intimacy. For example, some said it made sex a more “couples-oriented” experience, in part because it helped both partners reach orgasm at the same time.

Incidentally, the study did not reveal the opinions of the women involved. This is unfortunate, because it could possibly confirm that men’s perceived benefits were also confirmed by their partners. Perhaps the women saw other benefits as well? Also, the study was done only among heterosexual couples. And that too is a pity, because it would also be interesting to see if the same benefits would be shared among couples of other composition.

Nevertheless, the study does show that vibrators – and couple vibrators in particular – can improve the sexual experience, and the study results may help to reduce the taboo surrounding the use of sex toys.
