The Womanizer brand celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. When their first clitoral stimulator on air pressure technology came on the market in 2014, it truly revolutionised the women’s sex toy market. It was the first toy to mimic oral sex by sucking on the clitoris. Women who struggled to ejaculate reached a violent orgasm within minutes. This is a small piece of history.
In celebration of Womanizer’s birthday, NBRplaza is giving a 10% discount on all Womanizer models. Use the code ‘WOMANIZER’ at checkout in our shop.
2014: The first Womanizer
The first Womanizer was created in 2014 by Michael Lenke, who wanted to do something about the orgasm gap. His wife Brigitte helped him with the development process and tested the prototypes. Lenke’s first models were made of aquarium pumps that created suction.
The first model with the patented Pleasure Air Technology was called the W100 and was immediately welcomed as best new female product of the year at the ETO awards. At the time, the couple was still selling the product from their living room.
2016: The first copy-cats
Satisfier gets ‘wind’ of the new technology and decides to market with a cheaper model. Much cheaper. At the time, the Womanizer costs just under €190 and the first Satisfyer costs less than half. But there are problems too. Their first model breaks down quickly and – contrary to what the product claims – is not waterproof.
Womanizer also decides to launch a cheaper variant, the Womanizer Pro40, which costs ‘only’ €99.
2017: Womanizer sold to Plettenberg
After four years and €10 million in sales, the couple decided to sell the Womanizer as they struggled to meet demand. Johannes Plettenberg bought the company and founded the Womanizer Group Management GmbH.
Plettenberg also acquired Canadian sex technology company Standard Innovation Corporation, producers of the We-Vibe (known for their torque vibrator). This company had a similar history to Womanizer, as it too had been founded by a couple dissatisfied with the range of sex toys on offer.
2018: Merger with We-Vibe – The birth of the WOW Tech Group
In 2018, Plettenberg merged his two companies Womanizer and We-Vibe. Plettenberg professionalised the company and made it an even bigger success. However, WOW Tech does face more and more companies copying the product. Not only Satisfyer, but also Lola Dicarlo, LELO and many other brands want to ride on the success. Plettenberg decides to take legal action.
That same year, Womanizer launched the Premium, an improved version of the first model. It was soon followed by the Premium 2, which was slimmer and had an ‘autopilot function’. Autopilot lets you enjoy all 14 different intensity levels with one touch.
The WOW Tech Group is also acquiring Pjur, and premium brand of lubricant, in 2018. We Vibe will come out with a variant of the Womanizer in 2019: the We Vibe Melt.
2020: Womanizer Duo
The Womanizer Duo combines the famous suction tecjnology with a vibrator for penetration.
2021: A new merger into one of the largest sex toy companies in the world
The merger between Wow Tech Group and UK-based Lovehoney created a combined company worth $1.2 billion (size does matter). Lovehoney is the producer of the 50 Shades products, among others. The combined company continues as the Lovehoney Group.
2022: Female orgasm for men?
Womanizer is now starting to make products for men too. This is because they have become curious and want to experience a ‘female orgasm’ too. Womanizer is coming out with the Arcwave and the Arcwave Ion. The big difference between the Arcwave and other sex toys for men – besides the technology – is that they are not made of TPE but silicone.
Meanwhile, Plettenberg, along with some other companies, is taking the initiative to set standards for safer sex toys.
2023: Collaoration with Hans Grohe
Womanizer launched a brand new shower head: the Wave. This product is specially designed for masturbation in the shower. For this, Womanizer collaborated with plumbing manufacturer Hans Grohe.
2024: A whole range of Womanizers
The Womanizer range continues to evolve. The Womanizer Premium 2 is still the flagship and there is also still a cheaper variant; the Womanizer Starlet 3. But there is also a travel variant (Womanizer Liberty 2), the Womanizer Duo and there is also a more sustainable version (Womanizer Premium ECO).
