Anal sex continues to fascinate us. Some people love it, while others don’t even want to think about it. But we’re all curious. That’s why we’ve summarized the 10 most important facts about anal sex:
Anal sex is popular
Anal sex is popular in The Netherlands. According to women’s magazine Viva, 48% of all women have had anal sex at least once. A quarter of those supposedly does it once a month and half of them even more often. Other sources show comparable results for both men and women. About 40 to 50 procent of all men and women has had anal sex at least once in their lives.
So much more than ass fucking
Anal sex is much more than just ass fucking. Because you can also have anal-oral contact (rimming)), feeling or penetrating with fingers (or with an entire fist), you can use sex toys and you can use a strap-on for ass fucking (pegging). It is not clear how many Dutch people engage in all of these activities on a regular basis, because – as far as we know – there has never been conducted any studies in this field (we should).
Not just for gays
Many people (especially men) associate anal sex with homosexuality. This is an extremely strong misunderstanding, that sometimes even leads to withhold gay men certain rights (becoming a blood donor, for example). Research shows that gay men like anal sex just as much as straight men. Gays perform oral and manual sex more often than anal sex.
Why we have anal sex
The reason why men and women like anal sex, or not, differs from person to person. For men it is hot that it is ‘forbidden’. They are often inspired by what they see in porn. Also it is more tight and firm and it gives them a sense of power.Women that enjoy having anal sex, say it gives them a feeling of getting ‘filled’. And with anal sex, size really doesn’t matter. He can thrust really deep. Still, the wall between the vagina and the anus is quite thin, so it sometimes can bring almost the same stimulation as with vaginal sex and some women can even reach an orgasm by anal stimulation alone.
Is anal sex painful?
Anal sex can be painful, when you don’t do it carefully. The receiving party must be extremely aroused and fully relaxed. When you follow the right steps, it can be enjoyable for everyone. Yet, there are people who find it painful anyhow.
Some research shows that there is a statistical correlation between anal sex and orgasms with both men and women. What is unclear, though, if there is causal relation. In other words: do these persons reach orgasm faster of have better orgasms because they have aal sex, or are people who have anal sex more sexual active and is that the reason why they have more orgasms?
Many people are afraid that they will get STDs from anal sex, or that there are health risks associated with anal sex. Research shows, that persons who have anal sex frequently, don’t have more health issues. When anal sex becomes more extreme (fisting, penetration with large objects), there is a higher risk in complications.
Why condoms are essential
The anus is a source of bacteria. Infections are lying in wait. Also, the intestinal wall is thin and easily damaged, causing (small) bleedings and injuries (with extra chance on infections and contaminations). Cut your nails, use a condom, wash, never enter the vagina after entering the anus. It doesn’t hurt to use your common sense.
Anal – oral?
The idea alone, of licking someone’s anus, is daunting for many people, while others love it. The anus is filled with nerve endings, for both men and women. That’s why many people enjoy being stimulated there. When you give a blow job, you will always taste some pre-cum and when you go down on a vagina, it is inevitable to taste some of the moist. Unlike the penis and vagina, the anus itself doesn’t secrete any bodily fluids during licking. That’s why a clean anus just tastes like skin.
The importance of lube
In any form of anal sex, pegging, or prostate massages, personal lube is extremely important. The anus does not have any glands that lubricate. You must help mother nature. In principle, you can use any type of lube, but there are also lubes that are specifically designed for anal sex, like the series of lube by System JO, Male, or Pure Analyse Me (water based).
